abaya sizing

can you just never find the right abaya size? this is one thing i always have a problem with and its a big problem for me. why is it a problem? because I am not the average height, I always suffer when searching for abayas. most abayas are sized differently - the ones from the gulf are sized according to inches - 52 - 54 - 56 - the length of the garment.

I am lucky if i find a size 56 or a 58. im quite tall so i need a size 60 to get the extra length, because there is no use wearing an abaya that is too short for you and exposes your ankles. then you have to go and buy matching coloured pants (hard when your abaya isn't black) and then you get that awful/awkard pants/abaya look going on. it is just so awkward. i like my abaya to flow over the ground gracefully - khaleeji style. no short abayas for me please.

and then when i finally do find a size 60 im stuck with an abaya that is waaaay too loose for me. now, im not looking for a supertight abaya - otherwise what is the use of wearing abaya - but when the abaya is toobig and looks like you could fit another 3 people in it - it aint good.

my friend has the exact opposite problem. she is once again not the average abaya height and is quite short with a very tiny frame and always has to buy children's abayas (yes i laughed too) because the adult abayas are way too loose and way too long. even the smallest sized adult abaya is too big.

some abaya sellers online are terrible at tailoring pieces too. i once asked a company if i could pay more and get the 4 abayas i ordered tailored to my measurements. of course they said "sure - just send your measurements", so i did - expecting some beautiful abayas in my size.

a week later i received them. one was my size, two were the wrong length and three of them were even smaller than the measurements i gave them. there was no way my bust was gonna fit those babies. thank god for ebay, thats all i can say - otherwise i wouldve wasted all my money buying and shipping them over.

and the shop at Mirrabooka someone pointed out to me on this blog - well i went in there today. biggest size was a size 58 (not the 60 i needed). the 58s were nice and loose but once again too short - hence the need for a 60. and the weirdest thing of all was that the arm lengths were sooo short compared to the abaya lengths. they were more like 3/4 length sleeves. So strange for an abaya. needless to say, i did not buy anything.

thats the big problem with where i live - lack of islamic clothing choice. yes we do have a few stores, but most of them only stock a limited selection, are very pricey or carry items that are made from inferior quality material. (crepe please stockists! crepe!)

so i basically have 2 choices - shop here (blah) OR order online and take a risk (blah). im holding out and saving up for next years egypt trip and im gonna spend up big - (aahhh spoke too soon - 3 hours later i just bought the new Sex and the City Movie DVD and some new hijabs - damn my bankcard - damn you!)
