This photo was taken by Pulitzer Prize winner, photographer Kevin Carter, in 1993.
The photo was taken by Kevin in Sudan. He came across a Sudanese child who fell on the ground to have a rest as she fought her way to a feeding centre. The fat vulture followed her the whole way, waiting for her to die.
The photographer was told by authorities not to go near or help the starving child as the people who were starving victims carried diseases. He was not allowed to help this poor baby!! Can you imagine that???!!!! How hard would it be to HAVE to walk on and basically ignore a dying child and leave her for the vulture to eat???!!! Afterwards, he told an interviewer, he sat under a tree for a long time, "smoking cigarettes and crying".
The Photographer was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography the following year for his photograph. Two months later he committed suicide.
His suicide note read:::
"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings & corpses & anger & pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners ..."
