make your own maxi dress in 2 minutes!

i thought this was such a cool idea! anyone can make one because it is so simple and quick and you only need one giant piece of fabric to make it.

all you have to do is get the right material - you dont want something that will be too clingy like jersey because with this design it will just stick to your rear. instead maybe go for a nice airy cotton blended fabric and adapt it by sewing the line all the way down to hide your legs or copy it exactly as the girl made hers and wear it over pants.

will you try this at home?

i think i will give it a go but try to somehow change the chest area design because im not a fan of the tightness around the chest with hijab.

why buy when you can make!

i was looking online at long skirts and was about to pay $60 for a plain black skirt when some sense was finally knocked into me. i studied the close up image of the skirt and realised it was just two straight panels of black material, held together up the top with a black band of elastic. all up it would cost maybe $10 to make depending on the fabric purchased, so why would i pay $60 plus shipping fees for something so easily constructed?

i decided to check out burda style for their awesome patterns and found so many cute designs and sewing projects, including this one below:

how cute would this very hijabified cape look?

i think i might try my hand at some simple sewing because i could make so many cute things for myself without spending big bucks, plus i would get to choose the awesome patterns and colours .

do you ever make your own stuff?

HR video - how not to look like a turtle in hijab...

here is a quick video i put together on how to get a natural shape at the back of your hijab for girls with short hair. it also includes a little DIY project!

make your own hijab in 5 minutes

i was a bit bored today and had the inspiration to make my own hijabs, as i tend to do from time to time. I had been planning to make the following one for a very long time but never seemed to get around to it. it only took me about 5 minutes to do - thus making it very easy and such a cheaper way to have brand new hijabs then shelling out $20 for something similar.

what you need:

*plain black hijab (i used black chiffon)
*coloured ribbon (i used yellow)
*lace ribbon with eye holes (i used hot pink)
*black thread (i used cotton)

take your black hijab - mine here is made from chiffon to make a very light weight, flowy hijab.

take a length of yellow ribbon slightly longer than the side you want to decorate (do same for pink lace ribbon too). Today we are going to decorate the short end of the hijab.

take the pink lace ribbon and thread the yellow ribbon through the 'eye holes' in the middle of the pink lace ribbon.

using pins, hold in place the ribbons, securing them to the hijab.

start sewing by sewing down one side of the pink lace at its edge.

if you are hand sewing then use just a simple straight stitch. if you are machine sewing then also use a straight stitch from the machine's settings and sew away - just take it slow as the chiffon is delicate and if you rush it, it may get caught and bunched up under the needle.

do both sides of pink lace.

take some scissors and cut off the excess trimming and cotton thread.

and FINITO! you have finished. You may wish to complete the other short side of the hijab.

pretty easy, hey? with a sewing machine the whole process took me about five minutes. so much easier than working for a whole hour just to earn the money to buy one myself.

my plan for the next few weekends

i'm sick of buying expensive abayas here in australia and hate the fact that i always i problems with the lengths of my abayas so i decided to make my own. today i bought this online for about AUD $15 (including shipping) from here

i was looking all over the place and the net for abaya sewing patterns to start making my own abayas at home but couldnt find any. i looked on ebay and all i came up with was some bad kaftan patterns. i looked through many sewing pattern websites but the closest thing they had were patterns for long dresses that had to many panels and so on - when all i needed was a straight up and down abaya-like gown. then i cracked onto this beauty - under the "religious and holiday" section - never wouldve thought to look there.

it is perfect!

these are supposed to be for dress-up/fancy dress parties when you wanna look like something from the nativity scene. i really like the men's one on the bottom left - perfect for abaya! and the women in hijab (supposed to be mary i guess) minus the belt. and the patterns will be naturally loose too. Can't wait to get started sewing!

hijab dimensions- how to make your own hijabs

Hi Anon... the dimensions i use are about 70cm wide and from 1.5 - 2 metres long for rectangular hijabs. thats long enough to give you good coverage. i make mine extra long so i can wrap more of it to ensure it covers my chest and so that i can do more creative things with it, because of this i usually go for the 2 metre long version, but most average hijabs are about 1.5 metres i think, maybe even less.

All you need to do is get material cut to that length, then sew up around the edges so the material doesn't fray. it is so easy to do and so much cheaper than buying new hijabs. here in Australia most nice hijabs are about $30 so to make one yourself and paying only $5-10 for material is pretty good.
